What is BLU – RAY ?

[attachment=63431]

BLU - RAY Disc Characteristics

Single layer: 25 GB
Dual layer: 50 GB
Diameter: 120 mm
Thickness: 1.2 mm
Center hole diameter: 15 mm
Uses GaN laser of wavelength 405 nm
The smaller laser, compared to the DVD and CD, keeps the process more efficient (~5 mW)

BLU – RAY Format

The formats of the Blu-ray disc specifications : BD-ROM - read-only format for distribution of HD movies, games, software, etc. BD-R - recordable format for HD video recording and PC data storage
BD-RE - rewritable format for HD video recording and PC data storage.
BD with Protective Catridge
Error rates increased in reading and writing after the original BRD suffered scratches and fingerprints
So,the Blu-Ray Disc uses a cartridge to protect the optical disc’s surface from dust, scratches and fingerprints

Recorder Characteristics

Over two hours of HDTV can be placed on a single layer BD, which correlates to over 13 hours for standard TV
The transfer rate is 36 megabits per second
At 1x speed, it takes approximately 1.5 hours to record an entire single layer BD
Recorder Cost: $1,500 - $2,500
BD Cost: $26

Will it work on PC?

There are many companies that have their products supporting BD-ROM (read only), BD-R (recordable) , BD-RE (rewritable) drives for PCs

Conclusion

The industry is planning to market backward compatible drives with both blue and red lasers, which will be able to play traditional DVDs & CDs as well as BRDs.
The Samsung BD-P1000 blu-ray player is backward compatible.
Apart from this technology, Pioneer is developing an optical disc that will blow away the hard disc in most of our PCs in terms storage capacity, holding 500 GB of data.
Pioneer's lasers are ultraviolet, which have an even shorter wavelength than the blue.
