Definition:
Optimisation is the act of obtaining the best result under given circumstances. In design,construction,and maintenance of any engineering System.
The ultimate goal of all such decisions is to either minimize the effort required or maximize the desired benefit.
Objective Function:
Objective Function is a function that maps an event or values of one or more variables onto a real number intuitively representing some "cost" associated with the event.
Linear programming:
Linear programming is an optimization method applicable for the solution of problems in which the objective function and the constraints appear as linear functions of decision of variables.
The constraints equations in a linear programming problem may be in the form of equalities and inequalities .
Nonlinear Programming:
Nonlinear programming (NLP) is the process of solving an optimization problem defined by a system of equalities and inequalities, collectively termed constraints, over a set of unknown real variables, along with an objective function to be maximized or minimized, where some of the constraints or the objective function are nonlinear.

Minimum weight design of structures for earthquake,wind and other type of random loading .
