APPLICATIONS OF CONDUCTORS

[attachment=64671]

materials used in strain gauge

Noble metals:
Platinum
Non–noble metals:
Copper-nickel (Cu-Ni),
Nickel-chromium (Ni-Cr)
Iron-chromium-aluminium (Fe-Cr-Al)

Why PlATINUM

Platinum is most commonly used because:
Oxidation resistant.
High melting point.
High temperature coefficient of resistance.

RESISTANCE THERMOMETER

Resistance thermometers, also called resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), are sensors used to measure temperature by correlating the resistance of the RTD element with temperature.

Basic principle

RTDs work on a basic correlation between metals and temperature. As the temperature of a metal increases, the metal's resistance to the flow of electricity increases and vice-versa.

Semiconductors

Some of the most important semiconductor devices are diodes, transistors, and thyristors. These semiconductor devices have changed the face of electronics today. Transistors have virtually replaced vacuum tubes and the valves. Semiconductors find wide applications because of their compactness, reliability, and low cost.

Precision resistors

A precision resistor is a resistor that has an actual value that is very close (or precise) to its nominal (or stated value).
Precision resistors have a very high degree of accuracy of being very close to their nominal values

APPLICATIONS

High-precision foil resistors assure virtually noise-free operation offering predictable responses and very precise tracking of amplifiers within an individual seismic system or among several interrelated systems- whether operating in the high-humidity heat of the jungle or in the dry cold of the Arctic. When signals are later reconstructed during analysis, the precision-built amplifiers guarantee that the geologist can base their predications on precise, accurate data.
