Introduction
ELECTROOCULOGRAPHYis the medical terminology for a method used to calculate eye movement, specifically the movement of the retina. This method is dependent on a terminology called as Resting Potential. Resting potential refers to the difference between two points in the retina from its centre position. The retina has a plus side and a minus side. To measure, the positive and negative points of the retina, Doctors make the use of electrodes. The placement of the electrodes is up and down or right and left.
When the doctor asks the patient to see one electrode, the portion of the retina facing that position is the plus side and the portion away from that electrode is the minus side. Due to the movement of the retina, there will be a difference in the electrodes. The doctor will then measure the centre position and this difference is the measurement of the position of the eye.
Potential UsesThis method of measuring eye movement has many uses in the field of technology. Scientists use this method to help disabled individuals control wheelchairs, help them operate computers etc. In cases of extensive brain damage, where the person is unable to communicate verbally or physically, doctors can use this method to track brain activity.
