BLACKBERRY

The BlackBerry is a Smartphone device released by Research In Motion (RIM) in 1999

Since it was released, its popularity soared due to following functions:

ability to send and receive internet e-mail using the “push” method of delivery

phone and texting functionality

supports Internet faxing and Web browsing

supports the viewing of Office applications

ability to support numerous other wireless information services

Hardware

BlackBerry Z10 have,
-Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus 1.5 GHz
-Dual-Core CPU
-Adreno 225 1.5-1.7 GHz GPU.

GSM-based BlackBerry have,
-handhelds incorporate an ARM 7, 9 or 11 processor.

-Some BlackBerry models (Torch 9850/9860, Torch 9810, and Bold 9900/9930)have a 1.2 GHz MSM8655 Snapdragon processor.

-768 MB system memory, and 8 GB of on-board storage.
Some previous BlackBerry devices, such as the Bold 9000,

-equipped with XScale 624 MHz processors.
The Curve 8520 featured a 512 MHz processor,are based on the 312 MHz ARM XScale ARMv5TE PXA900.

software

A new operating system, BlackBerry 10, was released for two new BlackBerry models (Z10 and Q10) on January 30, 2013.

At BlackBerry World 2012, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins demonstrated some of the new features of the OS, including a camera which is able to rewind frame-by-frame to allow selection of the best shot an intelligent, predictive, and adapting keyboard, and a user interface designed around the idea of "flow".

Apps are available for BlackBerry 10 devices

Connectivity

BlackBerry smartphones can be integrated into an organization's email system through a software package called BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).

BlackBerry has a unique ID called a BlackBerry PIN, which is used to identify the device to the BES. BlackBerry now provides a free BES software called BES Express (BESX)

BES also provides handhelds with TCP/IP connectivity accessed through a component called MDS (Mobile Data System) Connection Service. This allows custom application development using data streams on BlackBerry devices based on the Sun Microsystems Java ME platform.

In addition, BES provides network security, in the form of Triple DES or, more recently, AES encryption of all data (both email and MDS traffic) that travels between the BlackBerry handheld and a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Internet service

The primary alternative to using BlackBerry Enterprise Server is to use the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

The service allows users to access POP3, IMAP, and Outlook Web App (not via Exchange ActiveSync) email accounts without connecting through a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).

BlackBerry Internet Service allows up to 10 email accounts to be accessed, including proprietary as well as public email accounts (such as Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL).

BlackBerry OS Architecture

ARM does not manufacture its own CPU chips, but licenses it to other manufacturers to integratethem into their own system

The latest series of blackberry phones (the 9000 series) uses a xscale microprocessor

Processor also utilizes an open source bootstrap firmware called redboot (red hat embedded debug and bootstrap), designed for embeddedsystems

Memory Management

A common criticism of the blackberry is that devicememory cannot be allocated to supplement

Application memory this is especially inconvenient as application
Memory handles all the overhead for running apps. If the device also has memory card storage, this makes the device memory redundant

Also, the memory manager does not release memory after applications are closed, which can lead to a considerable slowdown of the device overtime or prolonged use this is a major drawback for a device that is primarily marketed at those in business

Conclusion

The blackberry OS is the software platform within the device

Each new OS version, in turn leads to better browsing facilities and larger memory the blackberry is on par with o the iphone as a
Smartphone leader

It may even surpass it due to it’s multitasking features and ability to support wireless devices
