Intelligent Vehicles & Automated Highways
[attachment=66417]
INTRODUCTION
In recent years, the needs of Intelligent Vehicles are increasing in order to solve the traffic problems.
Therefore, many projects concerning with intelligent vehicles have been studied in the world.
In addition, these projects aim at high efficiency and safety of vehicles and traffic which are, and will be, required much more than in the past
SMART TRANSPORTATION
The concept is based on networking autonomous vehicles and equipping them with sophisticated sensors, machine learning, information processing, built-in custom software, and other technologies.
Network autonomous vehicles will provide all the benefits of individual autonomous vehicles and will also offer individual mobility to people who cannot or should not drive.
VEHICLE CONTROL
Implementation of AHS necessitates automatically controlled vehicles as mentioned previously.
Achieving the optimal solution to congestion and safety problems requires extensive research in system modelling, lateral (steering) controls and longitudinal (speed and headway) controls
Sensors and Communication
Information may be communicated by infrared beacons, broadcast and cellular radio, or using emerging ultra wideband technologies.
Infrared and laser range finding techniques may prove to be useful in this area
Opportunities, problems & prospects
Human error accounts for 90% of traffic accidents. Automated highway systems may make our roads safer by substituting for or complementing human judgment.
Yet this system also brings with it potential problems, including the fear of drivers at having to give up their individual freedom.
Another criticism is could have the unintended consequence of placing more single-occupancy vehicles on the road, and thus increasing pollution.
CONCLUSION
The utility of applying Robotics and Artificial Intelligence techniques to driving safety, through the development of Advance Driver Assistance Systems, has been presented.
This information can be useful for some like Line Keeping System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Pedestrian Protector, or Speed Supervisor.
To accelerate the development of fully automated connected vehicles, there is need for a cooperative approach.
