Speed Control of Brushless DC Motor Using RPM Display

[attachment=66761]

INTRODUCTION

BLDC motor are rapidly gaining popularity.

They offer longer life and less maintenance than conventional DC motor.

Noiseless operation and higher speed ranges.

In addition , the ratio of torque delivered to the size of the motor is higher making them used in applications where space and weight are critical factor.

As the result of all above advantages speed control is important.

SPEED CONTROL USING PWM

By changing the width of pulse applied to BLDC motor we can change the amount of power delivered to motor, there by increasing and decreasing the speed.

We create various duty cycle pulse using software.

Large duty cycle means higher width of pulse, higher mean voltage , higher power delivered to motor and higher speed.

Small duty cycle, lower width of pulse, lower mean voltage, lower speed.

ADVANTAGES

It can measure the RPM of any motor without any physical contact with it.
It is less expensive and it can replace the costly RPM measuring instruments.

CONCLUSION

An algorithm has been programed which generate the firing pulse required to drive the MOSFETS of three phase full controlled bridge converter.

The output from the converter is fed to the three phase stator winding of BLDC motor .

The motor is found to run at constant speed which is set by the external potentiometer connected to the microcontroller circuit

The program is found to be efficient and results with designed hardware are promising.
