INTRODUCTION

The IEEE definition of an antenna as given by Stutzman and Thiele is, “That part of a transmitting or receiving system that is designed to radiate or receive electromagnetic waves”.


MICRO STRIP PATCH ANTENNA:-

In its most basic form, a Microstrip patch antenna consists of a radiating patch on one side of a dielectric substrate which has a ground plane on the other side as shown in Figure 3.1. The patch is generally made of conducting material such as copper or gold and can take any possible shape. The radiating patch and the feed lines are usually photo etched on the dielectric substrate.


APPLICATIONS

• For embedded antennas in handheld wireless devices such as cellular phones, pagers etc.
• The telemetry and communication antennas on missiles need slot microstrip patch antennas.
• Used successfully in satellite communication


ADVANTAGES

• Low profile planar configuration which can be easily made conformal to host surface.
• Low fabrication cost, hence can be manufactured in large quantities.
• Supports both, linear as well as circular polarization.
• Can be easily integrated with microwave integrated circuits (MICs).
• Capable of dual and triple frequency operations.
• Mechanically robust when mounted on rigid surfaces
Microstrip or patch antennas are becoming more useful because they can be printed directly onto a circuit board. Microstrip antennas are becoming widespread in the mobile phone market. The patch antennas are inexpensive, have a low profile and are easy to manufacture.

In telecommunications, a microstrip antenna (also known as a printed antenna) usually means an antenna made using microstrip techniques on a printed circuit board (PCB). They are mainly used in microwave frequencies. An individual microstrip antenna consists of a patch of metallic paper of various shapes (a patch antenna) on the surface of a PCB, with a ground plane of metal foil on the other side of the plate. Most microstrip antennas consist of multiple patches in a two-dimensional array. The antenna is usually connected to the transmitter or receiver through the microstrip transmission lines of the blade. The radio frequency current is applied (or on receiving antennas the received signal is produced) between the antenna and the ground plane. Microstrip antennas have become very popular in the last decades because of their thin flat profile that can be incorporated into the surfaces of consumer products, aircraft and missiles; its ease of manufacture using printed circuit techniques; the ease of integrating the antenna in the same plate with the rest of the circuit and the possibility of adding active devices such as integrated circuits of microwaves to the same antenna to make active antennas.
