INTRODUCTION

ZigBee is a wireless technology designed for control and sensor networks.
It defines a set of communication protocols for low-data-rate Short-range wireless networking.
Named after erratic, zig - zagging patterns of bees between the flowers.
Operates in Personal Area Networks (PAN’s) and device-to-device networks.
Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard(LR-WPAN).
Products created by the ZigBee Alliance.
Operating frequency band
868 MHz in Europe,
915 MHz in the USA and Australia, and
2.4 GHz in worldwide.

ADVANTAGES

FREQUENCY BAND :- Zigbee operate in 2.4 GHz spectrum (unlicensed), 915 MHz and 868 MHz.
POWER :- Zigbee is upto 10 times more energy efficient than Bluetooth.
BATTERY – LIFE :- Zigbee is designed to run for 6 months to 2 years.
RANGE :- Zigbee allows a maximum range of 75m.
DATA RATE :- Low data rates about 20 -250 kbps.
COMPONENT COST :- The cost of zigbee`s components is lesser than other technologies.
TIME TO WAKE UP :- Zigbee device can wake up and get a packet across a network connection in around 15 milliseconds

DISADVANTAGES

Replacement with zigbee compliant appliances can be costly.
No more secure than a typical 802.11 wireless network.
Zigbee compliance certification for appliance manufacturers mandates lithium battery use.
Can be confusing at first for the home owner.
Zigbee compliant manufacturers slow to make an appearance on the market.

CONCLUSIONS:

ZigBee has been developed to meet the growing demand for capable wireless
networking between numerous low-power devices. It offers long life battery
extension and proved to be better wireless technology device. ZigBee demands
low data rate applications, and long battery life capability
Zigbee is an IEEE 802.15.4-based specification for a series of high-level communication protocols used to create personal area networks with small, low-power digital radios such as home automation, data collection of medical devices and other devices low-power, low-bandwidth needs, designed for small-scale projects that need wireless. Therefore, zigbee is a wireless ad hoc network of low power, low data rate and close (ie personal area).

The technology defined by the zigbee specification is intended to be simpler and less expensive than other wireless personal area networks (WPANs) such as Bluetooth or more general wireless networks such as Wi-Fi. Applications include wireless light switches, home power monitors, traffic management systems, and other industrial and industrial equipment that require low-speed wireless data transfer.

Its low power consumption limits transmission distances to 10-100 meters line of sight, depending on output power and environmental characteristics. Zigbee devices can transmit data over long distances by passing data through a mesh network of intermediate devices to reach distant ones. Zigbee is typically used in low-speed data applications that require long battery life and secure networks (zigbee networks are protected by symmetric 128-bit encryption keys). Zigbee has a defined speed of 250 kbit / s, ideal for intermittent data transmissions from a sensor or input device. Zigbee was conceived in 1998, standardized in 2003, and revised in 2006. The name refers to the waggle dance of honey bees after their return to the hive.
