Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are an emerging area of mobile computing. MANETs can be defined as a collection of large number of mobile nodes that form temporary network without aid of any existing network infrastructure or central access point. Due to the nature of MANETs to design and maintaining security is challenging task for researcher in an open and distributed communication environment. The connectivity between the nodes is sporadic due to the shared, error-prone wireless medium and frequent route failures caused by node mobility. The unreliable wireless medium in MANET is a threat for Secure Data Transmission. The communication in mobile ad hoc networks comprises three phases, Key Management, route discovery and the data transmission. Key management is a basic part of any secure communication structure. Most secure communication protocols rely on a secure, robust, and efficient key management system. Key Management comprises of Symmetric, Assymetric, Group and Hybrid key management schemes. In this paper, we present the study on the identity based key management scheme which reduces the storage cost and the burden of obtaining certificates. The identity based cryptography, which is a part of Asymmetric key based cryptography specifies a cryptosystem in which the keys are based on identities of users and it eliminates the requirement of Certified Authorities and Public Key Certificates. Hence, we propose a scheme which eliminates the problem of key revocation occurred in identity based cryptography.
