Amongst various online attacks hampering IT security, Denial of Service (DoS) has the most devastating effects. It has also put tremendous pressure over the security experts lately, in bringing out effective defence solutions. These attacks could be implemented diversely with a variety of tools and codes. Our analysis on the Dos attack explained the major types of Dos attack like smurf attack, ping of death attck, SYN flood attack, slow-rate Dos attack. it elaborate user the mechanism of the attack that how particular attack work and effect the network resources and network services. It also dictates figures and tables which will help to understand topic very well. After that, next topic is about detection phase, which will help the end user to understand that how to detect particular attack on system. There is different tools available to detect attack. We elaborate wireshark and netflow tool of cisco. This tool will give information about attack like time of attack start, total duration of attack being performed, no of packets being sent to system and also provide graphical representation of this information. This graphical representation helps end user to know the damage and other statistics. Then last elaboration is about how can we prevent the Dos attack using traditional approach like firewall prevention, router configuration etc. Then advanced topic is how to protect system by using ACL(Access Control List), rate-limiting and combining these both techniques. Here, combining both approach is very helpful to protect system.
