A web search engine searches document on the web and returned the result in the form of list called the web pages. Web pages may consist of information, images, maps and other types of information. Today search engines becomes the part of our life so many peoples are using search engines for daily purpose like student using it to solve the assignment, and others like travel information, health information cooking recipe etc. Now days so many search engine are available like Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, Excite, Bing, Lycos etc.
So web search engines are special sites on the Web that are designed to help people to find information stored on other sites. There are differences in the ways various search engines work, but they all perform three basic tasks:
• They search the Internet -- or select pieces of the Internet -- based on important words.
• They keep an index of the words they find, and where they find them.
• They allow users to look for words or combinations of words found in that index.
Early search engines held an index of a few hundred thousand pages and documents, and received maybe one or two thousand inquiries each day. Today, a top search engine will index hundreds of millions of pages, and respond to tens of millions of queries per day.
Aim of the Project
Aim of this Project is to find out a best search engine for a particular purpose. A rational user needs to use different search engine for different purpose and a single search engine may not fulfill all the requirements of a user. Again what would be the best can vary person to person.
Here our effort is to find out a method to suggest users the most efficient search engines as what he is looking for, based on a thorough subjective studies. Again it will be a dynamic evaluation process because each search engine is a product of some software team and refinement in the software is a continuous process. So the result should vary time to time on the basis of improvement in some parameters of users liking for a particular search engine. An ideal evaluation is personal evaluation.
In this project we are considering two things first is user’s view about weightage of parameters and personal evaluation of performance after then we will find out overall performance of a search engine that is aggregation of both perspective.
3 INTRODUCTION TO VARIOUS SEARCH ENGINES
There are so many search engines available in the market like Alta vista, Bing, Yahoo, Google, Excite, Lycos, Alltheweb, Hotbot etc. but only few are so much popular because of any reasons like effectiveness, advertisement etc.
In this project I am using only five search engines Google, Yahoo, Alta vista, Bing and Excite. I will discuss each in the following table:
7CONCLUSION
We have seen that today search engines are very important tool for information seeking. Search engines are the resources that help the people to search any kind of information like text, audio, video, images, maps etc. on the web in a simple and east way. So evaluation of search engine is very important. In this report we are evaluating five search engine Google, Yahoo, Bing, Excite, and AltaVista. Precision of any search engine depends on database of that search engine and precision of search engines depend upon queries, each search engine have different precision for different query because of its database content. We can conclude that precision and response time is very important parameter for a search engine to become successful. If the precision is high and response is low then surely user like that search engine this idea we have achieved from our survey.
