Abstracts: To understand the working of air bearing which is a typical type of bearing compared to other conventional bearings. Also investigate relative merits, short comes experienced and operation as well as cost of air bearings compared to more conventional bearings. In the conventional bearing system like roller bearing and hydraulic bearing, problem due to friction is typically higher so that overall power consumption is also high, damping greatly vary with temperature, cage frequency vibration in a ball bearing, the half frequency whirl is a bearing instability that generates eccentric precession which can lead to poor performance and reduced life in the roller bearing if a bearing is not rotating and maximum load is determined by force that causes plastic deformation of elements or raceways. In hydraulic bearing fluid leakage; keeping fluid in the bearing can be a challenge, oil fluid bearings are impractical in environments where oil leakage can be destructive or where maintenance is not economical. An air bearing is a non-contacting system where air acts as the lubricant that separates the two surfaces in relative motion. It reduces friction between moving surfaces and helps reducing the overall energy consumption of mechanical machinery in industry. Air bearings offer very low friction between the bearing and its counter surface. From the previous works, we infer that very little experimental work has been done so far on one of the main technical issues which are the investigation of thermal behavior and proper thermal management. The scope of this project is to investigate the thermal behavior of air foil bearings with and without axial cooling method. As the project involves use of certain mathematical and computerized tools and methods such as Finite element analysis (FEA), Finite element method (FEM), ANSYS, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD), it will enhance knowledge about the subject as well as modern trend of utilizing software’s. This project has been prepared to assist engineers and designers in the field of machine design, especially the precision machines with high speed and low loading. This report represents the current trend in the bearing. Principle of air bearings and superiority over conventional bearings is discussed. Keywords: FEA, FEM, ANSYS, CFD
