Abstracts: Hot molding sand has been described as the number-one sand-related problem facing today’s green sand metalcaster. Most foundries can show a direct relationship between hot sand and reduced casting quality. In fact, studies have shown that hot sand affects virtually every major operation within the foundry production line if not properly handled. In today’s competitive environment foundries can no longer afford to sacrifice the efficiency and lost profits that result from uncontrollable, hot moulding hand. Hence it is necessary to cool the sand that is to be used in casting so as to prevent any defects arising out of it and to maintain the quality of castings. This project deals with study of evaporative cooling of sand and parameters affecting it and preparation of heat balance for mixer cooler for calculation of water and air required for cooling sand at required temperatures.
