Abstracts: Number plate recognition works to extract numbers and alphabets from a number plate. A captured image of a number plate acts as an input for the program and the various operations such as image preprocessing, character segmentation, feature extraction, character recognition, classification are some of the operation to be done on the image to extract all the characters of the number plate. OCR system is used to detect the characters in a number plate. Segmentation is one of the most important stages of OCR system. Segmentation subdivides an image into it constituent regions or objects. Feature extraction refers to the process of characterizing the images generated from the segmentation procedure based on certain specific parameters and Classification involves labeling each of the symbols as one of the known characters, based on the characteristics of that symbols.
