Abstracts: Manufacturing defects play a large role in the failure of pipes. A pipe will fail if it is not manufactured properly. Changing of wall thickness and composition, and availability of surface defects such as pinholes (very small holes scattered throughout the casting) are important headache for manufacturers as well as users of pipes. Ductile Iron Spun Pipe (DISP) plant is essential for bridging the gap of growing demand of DI (Ductile iron) pipes in the country. Such pipes are generally used in water conveying facilities. It is observed that the demand for Ductile Iron Spun Pipe (DISP) for conveyance of water widely increasing due their inherent properties of the pipes which is favoring for usage. Government of India is focusing on improvement of water supply and wastewater drainage system and reuse of water for industrial purpose. Hence the demand of DI pipes is growing in manifold. Casting with pinholes is very common at centrifugal casting processes. When procedures aren’t followed with care, pinholes can be serious defect on ductile iron pipes. Since ductile iron pipes are generally used as as-cast and heat treated conditions, surface structure and surface oxidation also become important. Failures in ductile iron water mains are more complex and diverse than is widely understood in the industry. This report discusses the modes and causes of pipe failures that have been encountered during a manufacturing. In addition to corrosion, manufacturing defects, human error and unexpected levels of pipe loading all play a role in the large number of pipe failures that occur each year.
