Abstracts: Superior mix need not necessarily be obtained due to use of higher proportion of binder or special additives but due to use of stronger aggregates. The significant property rendering aggregates stronger, is its specific gravity. When the mix is used in the construction of road pavements, it is exposed to traffic effects such as impact, crushing, abrasion etc. The resistance of the mix against these effects depends on the strength and shape such as flaky, rounded, angular or elongated of the constituent aggregates. When the aggregates are too flaky or elongated, they break down during compaction and under wheel loads. However when the stronger aggregates having higher specific gravity are used, even with higher shape factors would have higher resistance against these effects.
