I. INTRODUCTION

Human Area Network (HAN) is a technology that safely turns the surface of the human body into a data transmission path at speeds up to 10 Mbps between any two points on the body. Red Tacton is the first practical HAN. A communication path can be created with a simple touch, automatically initiating the flow of data between a body-centric device and a computer that is embedded in the environment.
Red Tacton enables day to day connectivity to personal information, media and communication appliances within the much smaller sphere of ordinary daily activities. It creates a high-security, high-speed duplex communication environment at very low initial cost. It can be used in security applications such as personalized military equipment’s, authorized entry without identity cards, intuitive operation of personal operation devices or as one-to-one service devices that are tailored to meet individual requirements.

Red Tacton is a new Human Area Networking technology that uses the surface of the human body as a safe, high speed network transmission path. Red Tacton uses the minute electric field emitted. This revolutionary technology called “Red Tacton”, which use the electric fields generated by the human body as medium for transmitting the data.
The chips, which will embed in various devices, contain a transmitter and receiver built to send and accept data in digital format. The chips can take any type of file such as mp3 music file or mail and convert it in to the format that takes the form of digitals pulse that can be passed and read through a human being electric field .the chip in receiver devices reads these tiny changes and convert the file back into its original form.


II. WHAT IS RED TACTON?

Red Tacton was introduced by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) who combined TACTON - “touch-act-on” meaning “action triggered by touching” and RED - It is an auspicious color according to Japanese culture for warmth and love creating the name Red Tacton. It is a technology that uses the surface of the human body as a safe, high speed network transmission path. The study of Human Area,
i. Red Tacton uses the minute electric field emitted on the surface of the human body. Technically, it is completely distinct from wireless and infrared.
ii. A transmission path is formed at the moment a part of the human body comes in contact with a Red Tacton transceiver. Physically separating ends the contact and thus ends communication.
iii. Using Red Tacton, communication starts when terminals carried by the user or embedded in devices are linked in various combinations according to the user's natural, physical movements.
iv. Communication is possible using any body surfaces, such as the hands, fingers, arms, feet, face, legs or torso. Red Tacton works through shoes and clothing as well.

Features

Red Tacton has three main functional features:
i. Touch: Touching, gripping, sitting, walking, stepping and other human movements can be the triggers for unlocking or locking, starting or stopping equipment, or obtaining data.
ii. Broadband & Interactive: Bandwidth does not deteriorate even with duplex operations and simultaneous access by many users! Duplex, interactive communication is possible at a maximum speed of 10Mbps. Because the transmission path is on the surface of the body, transmission speed does not deteriorate in congested areas where many people are communicating at the same time.
iii. Any media: In addition to the human body, various conductors and dielectrics can be used as transmission media. Conductors and dielectrics may also be used in combination.

WHO DOES IT NEED?

All bargaining power in the consumer market lies with the device manufacturers who would be our buyers. Our suppliers are companies such as NTT that provide this technology to the device manufacturers. Currently, we define a device as any handheld communication medium such as a cell phone or PDA. However, as this technology evolves and its popularityspreads, a device could be any piece of technology that we wish to exchange information with.
While device manufacturers may see the potential benefits of RedTacton technology, they will likely require a significant monetary fee to influence them to build this new technology into their devices. The introduction of new technologies into existing devices often requires significant design changes that can be costly and time consuming. Unless the device manufacturer stands to benefit from the design change they may reject the new technology in favor of promoting and developing the old one.
RedTacton also needs a lot of research and development. The government, military, or medical professionals might be ideally suited to help further develop the technology and find other uses for it.


Mechanism Of Red Tacton

Data is received using a photonic electric field sensor that combines an electro-optic crystal and a laser light to detect fluctuations in the minute electric field. The naturally occurring electric field induced on the surface of the human body dissipates into the earth. Therefore, this electric field is exceptionally faint and unstable. The photonic electric field sensor enables weak electric fields to be measured by detecting changes in the optical properties of an electro-optic crystal with a laser beam.

Medical Applications

One critical success factor of this technology in a medical application is is it must work or it could create a life or death situation. If a death occurs that was caused by the technology not working properly, the negative publicity and lawsuits will force the technology to be abandoned for a medical application.
Another critical success factor is that the cost must not outweigh the benefits provided by the technology. Also, another factor is that the patients accept the technology.

Consumer Applications

One important critical success factor in the Consumer applications arena is that RedTacton must obtain widespread adoption in order for it to be useful and profitable. For this to happen, the technology will need to be competitively priced with competitive technologies. The product will grow in popularity quickly if more devices integrate RedTacton technology.
Additionally, consumers will need to be educated on the benefits and security features of RedTacton and how most importantly how it differs from current alternatives that are being used such as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

VII. ADVANTAGES


i. Red Tacton does not require the electrode be in direct contact with the skin.
ii. High-speed communication is possible between two arbitrary points on the body.
iii. Body-based networking is more secure than broadcast systems such as Bluetooth which have high range of about 10m.
iv. Network congestion due to fall in transmission speed in multiuser environments is avoided.
v. Superior than Infrared technology Superior than Wi-Fi.
vi. Data transfer during transfer is less.
vii. Use of minimum amount of power (of some mill volt range).

VIII. FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

Red Tacton has a wide range of unique new functional features and enormous potential as a Human Area Networking technology. Red Tacton is a big achievement given to the people. Red Tacton looks remarkably like a big pot of kryptonite is said to allow over 200kbps of data through the10 human hands or feet.
Data will travel through the user’s clothing, handbag or shoes, anyone carrying a special card can unlock the door simply by touching the knob or standing on a particular spot without taking the card out. It will have many future applications such as walkthrough ticket gate, a cabinet that opens only to authorized people and a television control that automatically chooses favorite programs.
The system also improves security. It ensures that only drivers can open their cars by touching the doors if the keys are in their pockets, not people around them. It uses technology to turn the surface of the human body itself into a means of data transmission

IX. CONCLUSION

This technology definitely stands out with perfection, when transfer of data is fast, feasible and more importantly reliable. So, in few years from now everything is going to fall under this super technology.

Red Tacton is an exciting new technology for human area networking. We have developed a transceiver that uses the human body as a data transmission medium based on an electric-field sensor that uses an electro-optic crystal and laser light.

While our immediate objective is to implement a Red Tacton system supporting two way intra body communication between any two points on the body, our longer-term plans include developing a mass-market transceiver interface supporting PDAs and notebook computers while continuing efforts to reduce the size and power consumption of the transceiver to enhance its portability.

Many areas can benefit from this technology. Initially, RedTacton could target security, the medical field, and the device communication field.The medical field would benefit in many ways. For example, implanted devices could use the technology to transmit information regarding their performance to doctors, patients wearing the device could quickly and securely transmit their medical history, and medicine containers could have chips embedded in them that when touched could send an alarm to the user, if the user’s device is programmed to know that an allergy to the medicine exists. Device communication is where RedTacton would compete with Bluetooth. Since RedTacton is more secure that Bluetooth, it would excel at connecting cell phones to headsets and transmitting data from one person’s PDA to another’s. As mentioned before, RedTacton is already positioning itself to become a ‘human swipe card’ and become the ultimate security device. One potential application that will be explored in depth is gun control.
