Abstracts: Conventional lathe machine uses gear trains and belt drive for power transmission. Research has been carried out to replace a gear train and belt drive with variable diameter pulley and variable frequency drive motor. This results in availability of screws of various pitches and continuous variable speed. Hence optimum cost is available and better machining can be performed on lathe machine. In our modification Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) has been used, so continuous variable speed will be available from motor itself which will reduce the cost of stepped pulley and be helpful for better machining. GEARBOX has also been replaced with a completely new kind of POSITIVE BELT DRIVE system which works on principle of timing belt drive to run lead screw. This belt drive will have a VARIABLE DIAMETER PULLEY, so that we can have continuous variation of speed from belt drive system, which will run the lead screw.
