Abstracts: Material handling equipments are an eminent part of the human life. Cranes are amongst one of the material handling equipment which finds wide applications in different fields of engineering. In heavy-duty material handling equipment, major concern is optimum utilization of material for equipment construction without sacrificing the design parameters. To understand this aspect and also to validate the design, as this kind of equipment is a vital part of any manufacturing industry; finite element analysis is one of the best methods that can be used extensively. In the present project the design of major components of electric overhead crane is done using relevant IS codes and the results were validated on the shop floor. To validate the answers finite element analysis of major two components i.e. girder and hook is done. The finite element analysis was carried out for the rated load condition with some impact factor. Maximum stress and deformation locations were obtained for each of the components to check the validity of design values. All these values obtained through detailed finite element analysis were found to be within the design limit. The design and analysis results were validated through strain gauge measurement. The crane was further tested at site for over load condition as this form a part of the acceptance criteria for installation. This test also passed without any failure or deformation on the major components. The complete analysis work gave a very good insight on various component design of crane and also a high degree of confidence, with cost saving. The present work is an effort to cover complete design and analysis of EOT crane (150 tones Capacity). Manual design has been done in accordance to the various relevant IS codes. Modeling and analysis of the entire crane components and their assembly (based on the manual design) has been done using Creo 2.0 and Ansys14 respectively. Key words: EOT crane, design, analysis.
