Abstracts: Turning is the primary operation in most of the production processes in the industry. Finished or semi-finished product produced by turning have surface finish is main quality function. In order to obtain desired surface finish by turning, proper machining parameters selection is essential. In actual machining there are many factors affect surface finish of part which are may be cutting conditions, tool variables and work piece variables. Among these parameters cutting parameters, feed, cutting speed, and depth of cut play important role in quality of machining and can easily controllable. Nowadays hard turning is considered as a new machining process aimed at turning hardened steels with high surface qualities. This process is a good alternative for many grinding applications as it reduces set up changes, production cost and ideal time without compromising quality of surface. The present study is to investigate the effect of workpiece hardness and machining parameters such as cutting speed, feed and depth of cut on surface roughness during turning of AISI 4340 steel with CVD multilayer coated carbide inserts by using Taguchi method which uses specially designed L9 orthogonal arrays designed in such a way that gives full information of all factors that affects response parameter instead of doing large number of experiments. Results of the experimentation were analyzed analytically and also graphically using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) and presented in this report.
