arsenic sequestration by metallic iron under reducing conditions
Contact with arsenic with metallic iron in anaerobic batch systems showed a considerable reduction in the concentration of dissolved arsenic. Scanning electron micrographs of the iron metal surface after contact with arsenic showed evidence of surface deposition. The X-ray diffraction patterns of these surfaces showed evidence of the presence of iron arsenide phases (FeAs and FeAs2) and arsenopyrite phases (FeAsS) and orifice (As2S3) respectively, in the absence and presence of dissolved sulfate. Studies of theoretical chemical specification supported previous experimental results. It was thus concluded that the strong reducing conditions produced in the vicinity of the anaerobically corroded metal iron surface result in arsenic sequestration.
