Objective of the Course

Recently, power electronic based devices are being used in various electrical equipment of transmission and distribution system and more efficiently is in operation of adjustable speed drives, electric traction, high power factor converters, arc furnaces, FACTS, HVDC systems, etc. They are serving as an energy conditioning device among various high, medium and low voltage consumers. The role of Power Electronics is to process and control the flow of electrical energy by supplying voltages and currents in a form that optimally suit to consumer loads. Power electronics and motion control have emerged as very important technologies in the recent trend of industrial automation. However, rapid use of power electronics based devices producing the problems of Power Quality. Power quality is associated with Power Electronics in today prospective. One has to think on various aspects of improving Power Quality in Electrical System which is effecting due to rapid use of Power Electron ics based devices. This FDP aims to cover those recent features of Power Electronics and their associated applications. Power Quality and associated issues like active and reactive power management, harmonics, power factor improvement, efficiency, cost etc. are another major concern of this FDP. Some challenges and recent opportunities of Power Electronics and Drives area will be also discussed.
