Introduction: Who is Watson?

Watson is an IBM supercomputer that combines artificial intelligence (AI) and sophisticated analytical software for optimal performance as a “question answering” machine. The supercomputer is named for IBM’s founder, Thomas J. Watson. The computer system was specifically developed to answer questions on the quiz show Jeopardy! In 2011, Watson competed on Jeopardy! against former winners Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings Watson received the first place prize of $1 million.

Performance of Watson:

The Watson supercomputer processes at a rate of 80 teraflops (trillion floating-point operations per second). To replicate (or surpass) a high-functioning human’s ability to answer questions, Watson accesses 90 servers with a combined data store of over 200 million pages of information, which it processes against six million logic rules. The device and its data are self-contained in a space that could accommodate 10 refrigerators.

Watson Key Components Includes:

Apache UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Architecture) frameworks, infrastructure and other elements required for the analysis of unstructured data.

Apache's Hadoop, a free, Java-based programming framework that supports the processing of large data sets in a distributed computing environment.

SUSE Enterprise Linux Server 11, the fastest available Power7 processor operating system.

2,880 processor cores. 15 terabytes of RAM.

500 gigabytes of preprocessed information.

IBM'sDeepQA software, which is designed for information retrieval that incorporates natural language processing and machine learning.

Purpose of Watson:

To create a new generation of technology that can find answers from data more effectively than current search engines.

Technology:

 Question Answering Technology

 Deep understanding of natural language

Natural Language: Watson represents a major breakthrough in the ability of computer to understand natural language which humans use to capture and communicate knowledge.

 Computer running software called Deep QA.

 Runs on cluster of power 750 Computers.

- 10 racks holding 90 servers, for a total of 2880 processor cores running DeepQA software and storage.

- Holds approximately 1 million books of information.

Data provided in Watson:

The sources of information for Watson include encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri, newswire articles, and literary works. Watson also used databases, taxonomies, and ontologies. Specifically, DBPedia. WordNet and Yago were used.

The IBM team provided Watson with millions of documents, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other reference material that it could use to build its knowledge.[11] Although Watson was not connected to the Internet during the game,it contained 200 million pages of structured and unstructured content consuming four terabytes of disk storage,[8]including the full text of Wikipedia.

How Does Watson Works:

Step1: Question Analysis.

Step2: Hypothesis Generation.

Step3: Hypothesis and evidence scoring.

Step4: Final merging and ranking.

This process takes a total of 3 seconds.

Operations: Jeopardy game.

In jeopardy game there will be host and some players. There will be a big tv screen where we will see some clues of questions in each column and under that money in dollors. Here participant select the phrase of question and money related to that Phrase of question. Now the question will be displayed on the screen and the participant who knows the answer will click the buzzer. The one who clicks the buzzer will answer the question. If the answer is right then that player will get the money which he had selected, and if answer is wrong then he will get minus value of that selected money. Here Watson receives the clues in the electronic text and at the same moment they were mad visible to humans. Watson is so fast and accurate that it takes just 5 to 6 seconds to answer accurately and at high speed. The below is the link where Watson participated among two human players and won the game show.

Beyond Jeopardy game here are some of the ways that Watson could make money for IBM and revolutionize the way we live.

 Shopping : A large majority of shoppers don't become buyers because they lack confidence in their selection without the advice of a great sales associate. So Watson can help in a great way.

 Cooking: Watson, for example, can create trillions of combinations of ingredients based on your preferences, like novelty, aroma and pairing abilities. Watson, for example, knows that bay leaf is a common ingredient in Thai cuisine, Pinel explained

.

 Travel: Watson can give a great experience while travelling. It can guide you to the best.

 Medical: Watson's first prominent application was in the field of health, with its first commercial use case with WellPoint in Aug. 2011. Watson helps reduce the time for treatment authorization and provides relevant information to allow doctors to begin treatment sooner.

 Banking: IBM announced an agreement with DBS Bank in Singapore, in which one of the biggest banks in Asia will use IBM Watson for its "next-generation" client experience. Targeted for a roll-out in the second half of this year, the IBM cloud-based Watson Engagement Advisor will improve the guidance DBS Bank provides to its clients.

 Finance: IBM also says Watson can assist traders with "up-to-the -minute" financial, economic, product and client data for more personalized recommendations/

 Home buying: For a home buyer, Watson can help understand a location, provide information about mortgage rates, or "the kinds of questions you have that go well beyond the product.

 Health: Watson can be made used to give tips regarding to the health problem and makes people fit among themselves.

 Joblessness: The unemployed find the right opportunities, helping solve joblessness.

Advantages:

 Provides services that revolves around the new digital world.

 Gives immediate answers instead of search results.

 Effeciency and Organization

 HealthCare uses Diagnosis and Information Warehouse

DisAdvantages:

 Cannot read PET and CT scans to identify the tumors.

 Questions asked must be in text.

 Less human effort. 1) too relaint upon technology

2)Less personal interaction between doctors and patients -> Limits understanding and reasoning behind decisions.
