Abstract
Underground is a challenging environment for wireless communication as the waves have to face the soil and rock as the medium. The conventional EM waves do not work well in this environment because of problems like
-high path loss,
-dynamic channel condition
- large antenna size
magnetic induction (MI) can be used to solve the problems of dynamic channel condition and large antenna size. But it may offer even higher path loss. MI waveguide technique for communication is developed based on the channel. the proposed MI systems is compared performancewise with the EM wave systems and the current MI systems.
A wide variety of novel applications, including soil condition monitoring, earthquake and landslide prediction, underground infrastructure monitoring, sports-field turf management, landscape management, border patrol and security is offered by the underground communications. high path loss, dynamic channel condition and large antenna size are the factors acting as the stumbling block in the use of traditional EM waves for underground communication.
alternative physical layer technique for underground wireless communication is offered by the magnetic induction technique.the dynamic channel condition problem and large antenna size problem of the electromagnetic technique is solved by this method. The attenuation rate of magnetic fields is little affected by the soil and water . the transmission and reception are accomplished with the use of a small coil of wire and thus the issue of antenna size is solved.
