A Rapid Prototyping Methodology for Algorithm Development in Wireless
Communications

The performance and feasibility of algorithms and the methods for the wireless communications uses is tested and verified by the rapid prototyping method. This article describes an FPGA/DSP based rapid prototyping methodology in which only minimal IC/FPGA design skills are involved in the process of development, and can be done with only the basic knowledge of an hardware description language such as the VHDL or Verilog. The advantage of this method is that the algorithm designers can easily test and verify their designs in the real time and the real world conditions and also implement their ideas quickly . An example of a WCDMA downlink is taken for describing the initial experience with the method as well as the design flow.
In various areas of engineering, the rapid prototyping is a widely used method for the purpose of functional verification of a design in an environment that is well defined. The use of extremely long simulation runs can be avoided with it and also functional assessment of complex systems can be dramatically improved. A variety of effects has to be faced by the wireless communication systems. As a result, the new algorithms and their accurate verification via computer simulations is a tedious task. Gaining confidence in algorithms is an important aspect in these systems.
