POWER GENERATION AND TRANSMISSION THROUGH SOLAR POWER SATELLITE
• Some of the facts………
INTRODUCTION
• India ranks 5th in world in terms of primary energy consumption
• Roughly 40% of residences in India are with out electricity
• 80,000 villages are in darkness
• The average intensity of solar radiation received on India is 200 MW/km square
WHY SOLAR POWER?
• Global warming can be minimized
• Fossil fuels can be preserved
• Availability of continuous fuel supply
• Barren lands can be made useful ……..
What is SOLAR POWER SATELLITE [SPS] ?
• SPS orbiting round the earth traps solar energy and generates electric power using photovoltaic cells.
• It consists
> Solar energy collector
> DC-to-Microwave converter
> large Antenna array
• It revolves in Geostationary Earth Orbit [GEO].
SOLAR ENERGY CONVERSION TO DC POWER
• DC to Microwave generation:
• Two types of microwave generations
1. Microwave tube
2. Semi-conductor amplifiers
• Efficiency of microwave tube is 70% and semi-conductor amplifier is < 50%.
• Microwave energy transmitter uses 2.45 GHz in the ISM band.
RECT ifying ant ENNA
• A simple construction of a RECTENNA
LIMITATIONS:
• Installation cost is high
• Fault clearing is difficult
• Probability of system failure during installation
