VLSI Challenges to more Energy Efficient Devices
For the mobile platforms, delivering the power efficiently to the advanced technology VLSI is a priority. Nearly half of the area in the modern handheld devices is used for conversion of power to the low voltages required by the advanced technology. The voltage is scaling down with technology and hence the tolerances required by the circuits for reliable operation is reducing. The present state of the art is discussed in the article. There is a yawning gap between the trends in the form factor and the present day VLSI technology. The integration of the power delivery circuis can mean a non-linear improvement in the energy consumption efficiency of the mobile device. The advances that maybe required in the VLSI testing technology, the circuit technology and the process technology that is needed to achieve such a scale of integration.
