I. INTRODUCTION

Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the name of a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by members of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition (HD) video, as well as storing large amounts of data.


II. GENERATIONS:

1st Generation:
Compact Disc [CD]
Size: 700mb
Wavelength of the laser: 780nm
Colour of the laser: RED

2nd Generation:
Digital Versatile Disc [DVD]
Size: 4.7 GB
Wavelength of the laser: 650nm
Colour of the laser: RED



IV. TYPES OF BRD

There are two types of BRDs namely:

Single Layer: Can hold data up to 25/27 GB that means 2 hrs of HD video or about 13 hrs of standard video.
Double Layer: Can hold data up to 50 GB that means 4.5 hrs of HD video or more than 20 hrs of standard video.


V. DEFINITONS

Pits: Spiral grooves that run from the centre of the disc to its edges
Track Pitch: It is the distance between the two tracks (of pits) on the surface.
Birefringence: It is the splitting a ray into two parallel rays polarized perpendicularly.
Bumps: They are the other sides of these edges.
