What is ZigBee

ZigBee is a home-area network device designed specifically to replace individual remote controls.

Technological Standard Created for Control and Sensor Networks

Based on the IEEE 802.15.4 Standard

Technical Attributes

ZigBee is based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard for packet-based wireless data transport.

IEEE 802.15.4 is a standard defined by IEEE for low rate, wireless personal area network.

The standard defines the Physical layer and Medium Access Layer

Protocol

Medium Access Control sub-layer (MAC)

MAC sub-layer is responsible for reliable communication between two devices over direct physical link (without intermediate nodes).

The key functions of the MAC layer include:
*Data framing and validation of received
frames
*Device addressing
*Channel access management
*Device association and disassociation
*Sending acknowledgement frames

Application

ZigBee enables broad-based deployment of wireless networks with low-cost, low-power solutions.

Medical devices and fleet applications are just some of the many spaces where ZigBee technology is making significant advancements.
