Introduction:
A press is a metal forming machine tool used to shape or cut metal by applying force. Press working may be defined as a chipless manufacturing process. By which various components are made from sheet metal. Press working is mainly useful for mass production work. They are the fastest and most efficient method to form a sheet metal to a desired shape. The application of press working components are numerous from A-Z industry.
Press working Terminology:
The complete die set used for punching and blanking operation is shown in Fig 1. he various accessories are provided in the die set for ensuring proper alignment of punch and die to guide the moving parts. The definition of the main components are given below:
The working Principle of a die set is described below :
A die set consists of three components namely, punch holder, die holder and the guide post/pillar. The punch holder is fastened to the ram of the press and die shoe is fastened to the bolster plate of the press. The guide posts are used to better align the punch holder with the die shoe. The lower end of the guide posts are press fitted into the die shoe. The upper ends have a slide(slip) fit with the guide bushings of the punch holder. The punch and die block are fastened to the punch holder and the die shoe respectively.
Construction of Presses:
1.Fly Press:
Fly press is manually operated having a cast iron frame. The screw provided at the top of the frame is moved in a nut. The arm and the screw are rotated by the handle. The punch is connected at the bottom of the ram and die is tightly fixed at the press plates called bolster. The support two cast iron weights act as a energy storage device. An improved and heavier form of fly press called a double side press .
Rack and Gear Driven Press:
As the pinion gear rotates the ram connected with
the rack slides up and down. To raise the ram quickly,
a quick return motion mechanism will be incorporated.
It is very much suitable for long stroke with adjustable
stroke length
Double action Presses:
It has two slides with two motions properly synchronized double action. E.g. The outer slide carries the blank and inner slide continues to descent for carrying the draw punch and performs the drawing operations.
Triple action Presses:
In a triple-action presses, three slides are mounted properly to ensure three motions for triple action e.g drawing , redrawing and forming operations. So, triple action presses are used for large works like motor car body panels.
