Real-time assistance prototype — A new navigation aid for Visually Impaired people

ABSTRACT

Abstract Orientation and mobility are tremendous problems for Blind people. Assistive technologies based on Global Positioning System (GPS) could provide them with a remarkable autonomy. Unfortunately, GPS accuracy, Geographical Information System (GIS) data and map-matching techniques are adapted to vehicle navigation only, and fail in assisting pedestrian navigation, especially for the Blind. In this paper, we designed an assistive device for the Blind based on using RFID, and fusion of sensory devices for obstacle detection. The proposed assistive device may improve user positioning, even in urban environment where GPS signals are degraded. The estimated position would then be compatible with assisted navigation for the Blind. Interestingly the vision module may also answer Blind needs by providing them with situational awareness (localizing objects of interest) along the path. Note that the solution proposed for positioning could also enhance autonomous robots or vehicles localization.

EXISTING WORKS

There are approximately 21.2 million visually impaired people in the India alone .Currently most blind people rely on other people ,dogs ,and their canes to find their way in buildings. This can be a hassle for both the visually impaired person as well as others. Many disabled people prefer to do things independently rather than rely on others ,Moreover watch dogs are hard to train The Blind Audio Guidance system can provide a cost –effective way to allow buildings to support blind people .The main goal of the project is to allow a enhanced movement of blind people in commercial buildings and malls, The system hopes to provide a portable unit that can easily be carried and operated by a visually impaired user .It could easily be incorporated in to practice for efficient use of Blind people.
