In the modern era, the use of airplane has become indispensable. The number of air services has considerably increased. But as usual safety measures are in need of special concern. As per the air disaster reports worldwide, most of them occurs at the time of takeoff or landing. So, most of the disasters occur at the airport, which means that it’s a hazard for airport as well as the civilians in the neighborhood. So it is very important to ensure the security of the airport and its neighboring areas. Moreover the climatic conditions also play a villain role at airport. Heavy rain and snowfall blocks the visibility of pilot while landing and more often causes runway skidding.

Here in our project we introduce a new method of airport security named air crash protector. It can be visualized as an electronic barricade, actuated at the time of a crash landing of airplane. The electronic part consists of an embedded microcontroller based system using the technology of ultrasonic for distance measurement.

The microcontroller, ultrasonic arrangement compares prerecorded speed and deceleration of a safe landing with landing under observation. Here in our project we use this criterion to sense crash landing. We employ a string of ultrasonic sensors mounted on the areas to be protected facing the runway. This helps to measure the airplane-building distance with the help of ultrasonic transceivers and embedded microcontroller. Using these instantaneous distances microcontroller calculates the speed and deceleration of the landing airplane, if these factors exceed the safe limit the barricade is actuated with a warning alarm. The iron grill barricade protecting the airport building, is always pulled into the ground and is actuated or pulled up instantaneously, only at the time of crash. The control of the barricade is with the same embedded microcontroller.

The embedded microcontroller (MCU) used should be selected based on RAM, ROM, operating frequency, peripheral, and cost requirements of the particular application. The PIC16F877A can be selected for this application because of its versatility as a general purpose microcontroller, its FLASH program memory (for ease of development), data EEPROM, and ample I/O.
