4G Vision and Technology

[attachment=21814]

Introduction

Recently, ITU-R made a survey of IMT-2000 system
such as the system is evolved gradually by 2010 and its
service will provide the maximum data rate of 30Mbps
until around 2020[2]. According to ITU-R, it is expected
that the IMT-2000 will continue to evolve until 2010,
and will be in service until the year of 2020 with
maximum data rate of 3OMbps[2].
However, the with increasing end user demands much
for wider service due to the rapid growth and variety of
IT (information technology) indusy, and thus, the
setvice with the data rate of 30Mbps cannot
accommodate the coming future mobile multimedia
environment. Therefore, worldwide radio and mobile
communication institutes and companies started the R &
D of 4G mobile communications system prior to
completing the implementation of IMT-2000 system and
providing its service.

The Systems for 4 6 radio mobile communications -
HMm, HMi, and HF'I System

For the HMm system, whose target is ECSUS
(Enhanced Cellular System for Universal Service), the
objective is to function as a 4th generation cellular
system that can provide high data rate transmission
capability of maximum 100 Mbps and support vehicular
speed of up to 250 km/h as described by the ITUX
vision for Systems Beyond LMT-2000. In the
presentation, we will show the basic operating
environment for ECSUS system The system uses FH
(Frequency Hopping) - OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency
Division Multiplexing) -FDMA (Fquency Division
Multiple Access) method in FDD (Frequency Division
Duplexing) mode. In the full paper, the HMM, HMi and
HPi system will be introduced more detail as their
feature, frame structure, top level arcbitecture, and so OR

. Conclusions

Various organizations related to 4G R&D around the
world are currently engaged on establishing the vision
for the systems beyond IMT-2000. However, clear
vision of the 4G system is still incomplete. R&D of
few keyenabling technologies to realize the 4G systems
are the main activities in these organizations. However,
in ETRI, 4G R&D project, "High -speed Packet Radio
Transmission Technology Research" was initiated in
January of 2002. The vision consists of 4th generation
system development to provide high quality service for
low-tier and high-tier cellular systems. It is OUT hope
that this project will be the starting point for worldwide
effort for 4G realization.
