Software Radio with Cognition ability using LabVIEW

OBJECTIVE:
Development of software defined radio using LabVIEW which can scan a spectrum and find spectrum holes (unused frequencies) and use these frequencies for data transmission.

IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGY: Tools, Techniques, Methods involved:
Step1: Designing of Software Defined Radio (SDR) in LabVIEW. Interfacing the computer to a RF front end using a USRP module
Step2: Scanning a range of spectrum using LCR circuit (USRP module), by varying capacitive parameters. Detecting the frequencies used in transmission.
Step 3: Building an algorithm for finding ‘spectrum holes’using ‘energy detection’ approach to implement cognition ability.
Step 4: Processing the detected signals using the algorithm implemented in LabVIEW over the desired range and plotting energy vs frequency graph. The peaks in the graph indicate spectrum holes (unused frequencies) to be used for data transmission.

APPLICATION:
The project is aimed at designing a software radio with cognition ability. The applications include:
1. Emergency networks
2. WLAN higher throughput and transmission distance extensions.
3. Used in military radios to provide flexible and interoperable communications.
4. Can also be used in effective ‘Bluetooth’ based communication system.

JUSTIFY CHOICE OF CATEGORY:
The project deals with design of software radio system in LabVIEW that can detect unused frequencies and use them for data transmission. This system provides efficient means of communication. The choice of category COMMUNICATION AND NETWORK SYSTEMS is thus justified

BASIC EXPLANATION OF THE PROJECT:
A software-defined radio system, or SDR, is a radio communication system where typical hardware components are implemented by means of a software. Cognition is the ability to sense the spectral environment over a wide frequency, and exploit this information to provide wireless links that best meet the user’s communication needs. The idea of the project is to design a SDR using LabVIEW, the hardware part of which consists of a RF front end (antenna) interfaced using a USRP module. The ‘spectrum holes’ in the channel will be detected by ‘energy detection’ approach using signal processing techniques in LabVIEW. These frequencies will then be used for radio communication.
