ABSTRACT
We propose a new gesture interface based on unicursal figures for TV control via touch-screen personal devices. The interface is a powerful but simple way of accessing the multiple functions of modern TVs.
Unicursal figures are made without lifting the thumb from the screen and sequences of commands can be issued without needing to confirm the thumb's position. Trial use confirms the feasibility of this interface.

Displays TVs connected to the network and can download hierarchical menus, such as electronic program guides (EPG) through the network. It is important that it is easy for users to change the menu and select the items in the menu. This is currently done using the TV's remote control. Personal devices with touch screens like smartphones are spreading rapidly and demand is growing to use them as TV controllers. Users want to use these personal devices in the same relaxed style as remote TV controls. In this article, we propose a new interface based on gestures for portable devices with touch screens.
