PLASTIC MEMORY

[attachment=22867]

Introduction

Main challenge in computer construction is the design of new memory chip with decrease size.
A conducting plastic has been used to create a new memory technology with the potential to store a megabit of data in a millimeter-square device - 10 times denser than current magnetic memories.
The beauty of the device is that it combines the best of silicon technology-diodes with the capability to form a fuse, which does not exist in silicon

What is Plastic Memory?

It is a two-terminal device that can be written & erased repeatedly by voltage pulses of e.g. -4V & +4 V.
It is a technique that store a megabits of data in a millisquare device.
It is 10 times denser than current magnetic memories.
Plastic Memory has the potential to become the next generation of storage media.

Spin Electronic Structure

It uses electron spin to Read/Write data
It is a thin strip of dark blue organic-based magnetic layered with a metallic ferromagnet and connected to two electrical leads.
The data is recorded and retrived from it by controlling the spin of the electrons with a magnetic field.

Facts About Plastic Memory

Plastic Memory is fast
Lab-built devices with a 1GB of storage capacity have yielded read/write cycle times that are 10 times faster than CompactFlash , which are typically 2MB/s read, 1-4 MB/s write.
It requires far fewer transistors, typically only 0.5M(million) for 1GB of storage compared to silicon’s 1.5-6.5B(biliion).

Conclusion

It is 10 times denser than current magnetic memories.
Store mega-bit of data in millimeter-square device.
Data can’t be rewritten so suitable for permanent storage.
It requires only few transistors.
It costs about 5% as much to manufacture compared to silicon-based memory.
Retain data without power.

Introduction

Main challenge in computer construction is the desing of new memory chips with decreased size
A conducting plastic has been used to create a new memory that store mega bit of data in millimeter-square device

Structure of plastic memory

A two terminal device in which an organic semiconducting polymer is sandwiched between two electrodes, indian doped tin oxide & aluminium
According to research analysts, finding alternative sources of memory has become a popular research issue .
Smaller memory space means the transistors needs more electricity and suck up more power.
Scientists at HP Labs and Princeton University invented a new memory technology

Working

The plastic polymer ,it conducts electricity at low voltages, but operates as a semiconductor at higher voltages
The new memory doesn't use transistors to store information as flash does. Instead, bits are written when a current passes through a polymer fuse, causing it to blow and change its conductivity.

Conclusion

The plastic memory widely be used.
In future, plastic memory will replace silicon memory
