Design of Substation Temperature Monitoring System
Based on Wireless Sensor Networks

[attachment=23703]

Abstract

Using the features and technology of wireless sensor
networks such as distributed and self-organization to build
substation temperature monitoring system, which can monitor
the temperature of bus bar junction of the high voltage
switchgear in substation in real time to prevent fire and other
accidents. This system applies ZigBee communication protocol,
and uses the CC2430 as RF transceiver. It has the
characteristics of low power consumption, low cost, flexible
structure and accurate measurement, and it can achieve the
long-distance temperature monitoring of the bus bar junction
in real time.

INTRODUCTION

The high voltage switchgear in substation is the
important equipment in transmission system, however, due
to the oxidation resistance of the bus bar junction in
switchgear is too high and the temperature increases, leading
to fire and other accidents, so it is very essential to monitor
the temperature of the junction. But the structure of the
switchgear is small, and these junctions are in the
environment of high voltage, high current, and strong electric
field, so the temperature measurement can not be manually
inspected. The wireless sensor networks based on ZigBee
has the characteristics of insulation.

ZIGBEE WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS

Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks (WSN), which integrate
sensing, embedded computing, wireless communication,
distributed intelligent message processing, and microelectromechanical
systems technology, is a network of largescale,
wireless, self-organization, multi-hop, no zoning, no
infrastructure to support. Nodes within the network are
isomorphic, lower cost, smaller. Most of these nodes which
were randomly scattered in the work area do not move,
requiring the working hours of network system as long as
possible[1]. WSN consists of a large number of miniature
sensor nodes which have the communicating and computing
ability, and widely distribute in monitoring region. We use
the cooperation of these nodes to monitor, sense and collect
the messages of the monitoring object in real time, and then
transmit these messages to the user terminals by selforganizing
wireless network and multi-hop relay method, for
making users to control the situation of monitoring region
entirely and respond to it.

Design of Sensor Node

Sensor node can achieve collection, processing and
wireless transmission function, and it includes sensor module,
microcontroller and wireless communication module, energy
supply module. The composition of the sensor node is shown
in figure 4.

CONCLUSION

In this paper, using WSN to design a temperature
monitoring system of bus bar junction of high voltage
switchboard in the substation, which can avoid the accident
because the temperature of the bus bar junction is too high
during the work process. This system, comparing
with traditional manual inspection and large – scale wiring,
the accuracy of data acquisition and the real-time of
transmission is improved significantly, and its constructing is
flexible, measurement is precise, operation is simple and
energy is saving for entire monitoring system.
Using the features and technology of wireless sensor networks such as distributed and self-organization to build substation temperature monitoring system, which can monitor the temperature of bus bar junction of the high voltage switchgear in substation in real time
