The mouse is one of the main components of a desktop computer along with the keyboard, monitor and tower. The mouse is used to perform many functions and makes browsing the web and your operating system quick and easy.
There is now however a project called mouseless. It is an invisible computer mouse. The invisible mouse works in the same way as a normal mouse but there is no hardware. So technically it is not invisible as it's not actually there.
Over the years computer technology has continued to improve rapidly. The speed at which new processing units come out continues to quicken. Computers get faster, lighter and cheaper with time. Over the past few decades the computer mouse has remained relatively unchanged but the new invisible mouse could change all this.
The mouse is an intuitive tool that can be used by all ages and intellects. The easy to use button design works well for completing simple tasks. Recently there have been some attempts at optimising how a mouse works using multi-touch and what is known as gestural interaction technologies.
How does the invisible mouse work?
The new invisible mouse removes the need for a mouse but continues to use the same simple and intuitive actions on regular computer mouse. The mouse uses an infrared laser beam with a line cap and camera. Both the beam and the camera are embedded in the computer. The beam creates a laser on the surface where your hand rests and the camera picks up your movement and translates it into cursor movement.
To make a selection or click the mouse you tap the table and the software recognises you have done this and translates this to mean you want to click the mouse. The invisible mouse is still in continued development. There are intentions to incorporate additional gestures above that of movement and click to include other hand gestures that would zoom in and out for example.
