Brain Gate system
ABSTRACT
The dream of BrainGate program is to develop a fast, reliable and unobtrusive
connection between the brain of a severely disabled person and a personal computer.
This paper is about 4mm computer chip, which is implanted into the brain, monitors the
brain activity of the patient and converts the intention of the user into computer
commands.
The system is designed to restore functionality for a limited, immobile group
of severely motor-impaired individuals. Connecting human brain to a computer for
blissful freedom from keyboard, mouse had been achieved through this technology. The
BrainGate Neural Interface System is an investigational assistive device designed by
Cyberkinetics.
The principle of operation behind the Brain Gate system is that with intact
brain function,brain signals are generated even though they are not sent to rest of the
parts of the body.The signals are translated into cursor movements, offering the user an
alternate “Brain Gate pathway” to control a computer with thought ,just as individuals
who have ability to move their hands use a mouse. This activity is thus sent in the form of
signals and then decoded in to program ,thus moving the arms.
