INTRODUCTION:

The telephone and the Internet have changed the way we deliver and receive information and the way we use it for business, entertainment, planning and living. Unfortunately, only 15 per cent world’s population is believed to have access to the Internet. And more than 80percent of people in the world are believed to have never even heard a dial tone. This digital divide-between the information ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’-is widening. In India, the problem is acute. Among 1000 million people, there are fewer than 35 million phone connections and around 2 million Internet connections. There is an urgent need to bridge this gap.

CorDECT TECHNOLOGY:

The technology is based on digital enhanced cordless telecommunications (DECT). It uses a bandwidth of 20MHz in the 1880-1900MHz range and does not require any prior frequency planning. In order to provide high capacity in a small bandwidth of 20MHz, it uses an automatic channel allocation procedure called dynamic channel selection (DCS). There are 10 radio frequency carriers in a modest 20MHz bandwidth. Each carrier is divided into 24 time slots-12 to transmit and 12 to receive. These 12-slot pairs for each carrier (total 10 carriers) give rise to 120 channels.

FEATURES OF THE CorDECT:

The CorDECT is:

• Cost saving: it reduces per line cost to half.
• Fast and easy to install.
• Improved reliability over traditional, connection-based or copper cables.
• Ethernet or serial port for Internet access.
• Dynamic channel selection (DCS) to allow multiple operations to share frequency band.
• 35 to 70 kbps Internet access, plus 32kbps voice channel.
• MC-TDMA (multiple carrier/time division multiple access) technology.
• It operates in the frequency band of 20 MHz, i.e., 1880-1900 MHz.
• Ten carriers that have 12 channels per carrier; hence 120channels in all.
• ADPCM (adaptive differential pulse code modulation) for speech coding.
• Voice, fax, data and N-ISDN are services supported by CorDECT.
• Well suited for high as well as low density of subscribers per square kilometer.
• Simultaneous Internet access and telephone conversation on the same line.

THE FUTURE OF CorDECT:

Cable TV networks have grown at a very rapid rate in India, with the number of cable TV users growing to about 50 million between 1992 and 2003. This industry is mostly managed by self employed persons. Therefore even though cable technology is complicated as compared with the existing telephone technology, the cable TV system in India serves people much better than a telephone system, primarily due to these local service providers.
