Smart Audio/Video Playback Control Based on Presence Detection and User
Localization in Home Environment

Abstract

This paper presents the design and implementation
of a simple software-based home control platform used for the
automatic control of audio/video devices. The system facilitates
integration of various residential sensors, with an accent on
users’ localization and presence detection. For the presence
detection and localization we utilize three, the most frequently
used technologies: visual (3D camera), audio (Microphone
array) and passive infrared (PIR sensors).

INTRODUCTION

In the near future, our homes will become equipped with
a number of intelligent devices which will provide us with
necessary information, communication and entertainment.
Furthermore, these devices will be able to adapt their
behavior to a consumer, his manners and habits, with the
possibilities to predict his needs. Complex infrastructure of
smart devices will be present around us, seamlessly woven
into the fabric of everyday life.

SMART HOME CONTROLLER PROTOTYPE

In our previous research [5] we have presented the home
automation controller, the software solution which can be
easily integrated into standard TV set-top box device
enabling smart control of various household appliances. In
this research we are focused on the interaction with
multimedia environment which automatically controls the
audio visual content rendering, by depending on the current
human behavior. Devices are controlled manually or
automatically by using predefined behavioral patterns -
scripts. By using the scripts, the system enables simple, user
defined, adaptive and automatic control of various UPnP
based multimedia devices.

USER DETECTION AND LOCALIZATION TECHNIQUES

Smart home environments consist of a large number of
networked sensors and actuators for automated control and
residential comfort. A basic condition for all smart home
environments is highly efficient sensors and algorithms for
presence detection and user localization. Sensors capable to
detect and localize occupants should provide information
about the number of occupants, current physical activity and
localization of occupants in a room.

CONCLUSION

The presented home automation software platform
successfully integrates various sensors and actuators inside a
house by building an Ambient Intelligence ecosystem. In this
research we were focused on presence detection and persons
localization sensors; the most popular PIR sensor,
Microphone array and a novel multimodal Microsoft sensor,
Kinetic 3D camera. By integrating these sensors into the
ecosystem we implemented fast and accurate data processing
algorithms used for the presence detection and localization.
