HISTORY


Rapid Application Development (RAD) is a term originally used to describe a software development process first developed and successfully deployed during the mid 1970s by the New York Telephone Co's Systems Development Center under the direction of Dan Gielan.


RAD MODEL

The RAD model is a “High speed” adaptation of the linear sequential model in which rapid development is achieved by using component based construction.

Requirements need not to be well understood and project scope has to be constrained for using this model.

It is used primarily for information systems applications.


Essential Aspects in RAD


Rapid Application Development has four essential aspects: methodology, people,management, and tools.

If any one of these ingredients is inadequate, development will not be high speed.


Advantages

Early visibility. (Because of prototyping)

2) Greater flexibility. (Because developers can redesign almost at will)

3) Greatly reduced manual coding (Because of wizards and code generators)

4) Increased user involvement. (Because they are represented on the team)

5) Short development cycle.


Disadvantages

For large and scalable projects. RAD requires sufficient human resources to create the right number of RAD teams.

2) RAD requires developers and customers who are committed to rapid fire activities.

3) Not all types of applications are appropriate for RAD.
