RFID

[attachment=25526]

INTRODUCTION

Uses radio-frequency waves to transfer data between a reader and a movable item.

Is fast, reliable, and does not require physical sight or contact between reader/scanner and the tagged item.

Attempts to provide unique identification and backend integration that allows for wide range of applications.

VARIOUS TAGS

Inductively Coupled RFID tags: complex systems of metal coils, antennae and glass. Inductively coupled RFID tags were powered by a magnetic field generated by the RFID reader.
Capacitively Coupled RFID tags: created in an attempt to lower the technology's cost.

Basic Types:

Active
Tag transmits radio signal
Battery powered memory, radio & circuitry
High Read Range (300 feet)
Passive
Tag reflects radio signal from reader
Reader powered
Shorter Read Range (4 inches - 15 feet)

RFID V/S BARCODES

RFID is 15-20 times faster than manual and barcode processes for inventorying IT assets.

Some companies experience a 95% reduction in time using RFID.
RFID tags are an improvement over bar codes because the tags have read and write capabilities.

Data stored on RFID tags can be changed, updated and locked.
