Choice of microphones and its placement.

Far field recording


Sound is recorded by distant miking [ >3’] often in stereo mode.
Advantages
Localization and spread can be captured
Source ambience can be preserved.
Disadvantages
If not done properly, can lead to leakages and consequent coloration.
Recording sound in this method needs professional effort.
Application : Western classical music


Multi track recording

Employs elaborate setup
Advantages

Clear and tight sound.
Possible to capture the tonal balance of the instruments.
Leakage leading to coloration can be totally prevented.
Post production possibilities

Disadvantages

The setup is complicated to handle and maintain.
Artists will be deprived of the participatory enjoyment
Application : Orchestral music (film music)


Near field recording


Advantages
Reasonably clear and tight sound.
The effect of the enclosure will be minimal.
Artists will have the participatory enjoyment.
Leakage leading to coloration can be reduced.
Easy to setup.

Disadvantages
Sound can be harsh.
Lack of tonal balance.
Ambience will be missing.
Source localization and spread is totally lost.
Live recording, hence limited possibilities for post production.
Recording sound in this method needs careful effort.
