ELECTRIC TRACTION
[attachment=26417]
ABSTRACT
There is a wide variety of electric traction systems around the world, which have been built according to the type of railway, its location and the technology available at the time of the installation.
The paper presents over view of electric traction system in railways
INTRODUCTION
Traction motors can use both ac/dc currents with suitable control electronics. They are operating in high voltage current.
They can widely used for vehicles, elevators, locomotives etc. Electric traction makes things easier and safer. They bring down the distance and time and break the barriers of time and space.
WHAT IS MEAN BY TRACTION?
Driving forward of vehicle is called Traction and the system, which employs this type of mechanism is called Traction system
ELECTRIC TRACTION:
The electric traction system is the system by which traction motor is moved with loads.
HOW DOES AN ELECTRIC TRAIN MOVE?
The electric railway needs a power supply
DC or AC supply
Over head wire ,third rail
Traction motor collects current from Catenary
Through pantograph
OPERATION:
To understand the operation of a traction motor, three transition panels are studied. Transition panels perform transition events. These events correspond to field weaking and changing the connections of traction motor. Three transition panels are performed at three different speeds –
First transition at 30 km/hr speed
Second transition at 50 km/hr speed
Third transition at 80 km/hr speed
Braking in traction motors
RHEOSTATIC BRAKING
The motors become generators and feed the resulting current into an on-board resistance.
REGENERATIVE BRAKING
The train could use its motors to act as generators and that this would provide some braking effect energy.
ADVANTAGES:
Cheapness
Cleanliness
Maintenance cost
Starting time
Saving in high grade coal
DISADVANTAGES:
Higher initial expenditure.
Failure of supply is a problem.
The electrically operated vehicles have to move only on electrified track.
Interference with telegraphs and telephone lines.
Conclusion
No single motor is ideal for traction purposes. But; DC Series Motors are most suitable for this work
Power Electronics have been resorted to in a major way as in case of thyristor control.
Different types of braking for the traction system was studied.
