Abstract of 3G
[attachment=27972]
3G (Third Generation) is a generic name for a set of mobile technologies set to be launched by the end of 2001 which use a host of high-tech infrastructure networks, handsets, base stations, switches and other equipment to allow mobiles to offer high-speed Internet access, data, video and CD-quality music services.
Data speeds in 3G networks should be show speeds of to up to 2 Megabits per second, an increase on current technology.
Abstract of 2G/2.5G
GSM for example is a 2G technology. It uses TDMA technology, proving data speeds of 9.6kbps/14.4kbps. The packet radio upgrade to GSM, called GPRS, can have speeds of up to 114kbps. GPRS an interim technology towards 3G, and hence is known as 2.5G.  GSM might go the same way as the older first generation (1G) NMT and AMPS networks in 8-15 years because of the use of newer and better UMTS technology.
Abstract of CDMA
The new 3G services are almost all flavors of technologies based on the generic name, CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access). CDMA is a digital wireless technology that allows multiple users to share radio frequencies at the same time without interfering with each other. A telephone or data call is assigned a unique code that distinguishes it from others and and since the signals hop among different frequencies.
Abstract of ITM-2000
In all, these technologies fall under the ITUs generic name of IMT-2000 (International Mobile Telecommunications 2000). But when the ITU tried to unify and standardize 3G technologies, no consensus was reached. There were thus five terrestrial standards developed as part of the IMT-2000 program. Instead, depending on where in the world 3G will be implemented, the 3G standard will be based on CDMA variants cdma2000 or W-CDMA.
Advantages of 3G
The Functions:-
People can perform a lot of functions such as sending information and data and acquiring these via wireless access. You get to have data regardless of the time and location.
Using the Technology:-
People can use their handsets and let it function as a modem for their computer to mail and send necessary documents. Downloading songs and games will be much faster compared to older technologies.
Getting Information:-
Getting information is one of the best features of 3G technology. You can also watch the latest news and headlines, getting data like the weather, sports and economic details.
Higher Speed:
With 3G technology, you get to enjoy data transmission speed leading up to 2Mbps, considering that you have a phone in stationary mode.
Recent Technologies
3G technology includes UMTS and 1xEV-DO ranging from 144 Kbps up to 2 Mbps. Some of the included features are full-motion video, quick web browsing, 3D games and streaming music. 3.5G technology includes HSDPA which is an upgrade for UMTS and 1x EV-DV, with speeds ranging from 384 Kbps up to 14.4 Mbps. Features include video conferencing and on-demand video. 4G and more features speeds from 100 Mbps up to 1 Gbps.
Security
3G provides you the a bigger degree of security compared to 2G predecessors. It allows the UE to authenticate the network that it is connected to, the consumer can be certain that the network is the right one and not impersonated. 3G networks apply the KASUMI block crypto, aside from the older A5/1 stream cipher.
Some Issues
3G is successfully introduced to consumers all over the globe, with a number of issues being argued by both users and providers. Expensive input fees for the licenses and agreements can be given, as well as several differences in the licensing terms. There is also the extra expense of acquiring advanced 3G mobile units and the lack of buy-in by 2G mobile consumers in exchange for the new wireless services of 3G.
