Need for RFID

[attachment=27992]
Introduction to Auto ID

Automatic identification procedures (Auto-ID) have become very popular in many service industries, purchasing and distribution logistics, industry, manufacturing companies and material flow systems.
Automatic identification procedures exist to provide information about people, animals, goods and products in transit.

RFID Components

Reader consists of
A radio frequency module (transmitter and receiver)
A control unit which controls the flow of data
A coupling element like an antenna to the transponder
Tag consists of
Microchip for storage and computation
coupling element, such as an antenna coil for communication
RFID systems operate according to one of two basic procedures:
Full duplex (FDX) or half duplex (HDX) systems
Sequential (SEQ) systems

Summary of the literature survey

The components of the RFID system is studied in detail with classification, type of data transfer
The Baseband processor is one of the most important part of RFID tag chip
The EPC class-1 generation-2 UHF RFID protocol proposed by EPC global specifies the RFID air interface
The data security is one of the important concept that is to be kept in mind while designing the Tag consisting of Baseband processor
Anti-collision algorithm such as slotted aloha, binary tree search algorithm is employed for avoiding data collision when two or more tags respond at a same time. The literature review says that the slot counter and the random number generator are employed for anti-collision procedures.
By using the slot counter and random number generator, the complexity of the processor is reduced .

Modified Architecture for Low Power

The reference architecture was modified by modifying the controller block
In reference architecture, the controller was controlling only the data flow to each of the sub modules, whereas the modified architecture’s controller controls both clock and the data flow for each of the sub module.

My Contribution

Baseband processor architecture includes power optimizations technique like clock gating. It also includes a controller which activates the required block at the required time
The designed controller not only controls the data flow for each block but also controls the clock for each of the sub modules
By controlling the clock and data of each sub module, power was reduced significantly
The processor is also compatible with EPC class-1 generation-2 UHF RFID protocol
Complexity is reduced by using slot counter and random number generator for anti-collision algorithm.
