LEAD ZIRCONATE TITANATE BY SOL-GEL METHOD

ABSTRACT


Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) nanopowder is prepared by Sol-Gel processing method.

Lead Acetate Trihydrate, Zirconium Propoxide, Titanium Isopropoxide, Acetylacetone and 1,1,1-hydroxymethyl ethane are the raw materials used.

X-Ray Diffractometer is used to study the presence of submicrometer powder.

Scanning Electron Microscopy helps in determining the particle size and morphological characteristics of the powder.


INTRODUCTION


Lead Zirconate Titanate is represented by the formula Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3.
Lead Zirconate Titanate ceramics have good piezoelectric and pyroelectric properties.
They have high Curie Temperature and low sintering temperature.
Useful for making Transducer, Computer Memory, Pyroelectric Sensors.



LITERATURE SURVEY


Lead Zirconate Titanate was developed  at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, around 1952.
Lead Zirconate Titanate, also known as PZT is a ceramic material.
PZT materials are composed of lead, zirconium and titanate which are combined under very high temperatures.
Commercially, it is not used in its pure form but is doped with either acceptor dopants or donor dopants.

Conical Flasks

Oil Bath
Tray Dryer
Muffle Furnace
X-Ray Diffractometer
Scanning Electron Microscopy


PROCEDURE


Zirconium propoxide and Acetylacetone solution is prepared.

The solution is heated at 90̊ C in an oil bath for 2 hrs and then cooled to room temperature.

Titanium isopropoxide, Lead acetate trihydrate and 1,1,1-Hydroxymethyl ethane is added to the above solution.

Mixture is then heated at 70̊ C for 4hrs.

Viscous golden solution formed after heating is called a Sol.
