Radio-frequency identification (RFID)

[attachment=29132]

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays almost all kind of businesses are shifting to computer based systems; one of this is the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based system. RFID technology is being implemented in a number of industries. Supply chain implementation is perhaps one of the most frequently mentioned applications of RFID tags and equipment.
By definition, Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking. The tag contains electronically stored information which can be read from up to several meters (yards) away.
As various industries shifting to this paradigm, the academe sector libraries have used RFID to replace the barcodes on library items. The tag can contain identifying information or may just be a key into a database.
However, many library systems are operated manually by group of people. In such situations many people involved in the process of managing the library such a way that to keep records regarding the books and borrower, check the book manually, keep records on issued books etc. all these thing have to carried out manually and if the library is large in content handling is also a problem.
Among other technologies, the proponent is concern with developing RFID based library management system for Southern Baptist College Main Library. The advantage of this study is to make their current system more effective and efficient.

Background of the Study

Southern Baptist College in M’lang, Cotabato is a Christian institution that was originally incorporated in 1951 under the name of the United Christian College (UCC); the College began the operation in 1952.
A library is a collection of books, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. The term "library" has itself acquired a secondary meaning: "a collection of useful material for common use," and in this sense is used in fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, electronics and biology.
Currently, the Main library transaction is done manually. They are using book cards (see appendix A) with corresponding book information, date borrowed, dare due, time borrowed and borrower’s name. Since Manual record keeping is also not reliable method as people tend to forget things, so as to the library in-charge encountered some problems such as data storing of book registration in a traditional way, problem in identifying book status whether books are still available or not available, delay in retrieving data of borrowed books and computation of fines in overdue books. Security is also one of the problems they encountered because there’s no such security implemented, and lastly they also encountered problems in their book inventory because traditional method of book inventorying is an accurate and long time processing in data management.
This research is intended for public, institutions and researchers’, use as their resourceful information. In particular, this study will help the library personnel or the librarian in managing the library.

Statement of Problem

Southern Baptist College Main Library operated manually by a group of people. In such situation though many people involved in the process of managing the library, problems that exist are:
1. Book registration Update of the information of the book is difficult and time consuming.
2. Time consuming in identifying of book status
3. Slow retrieval of data in borrowing and returning of books.
4. Lack of security system.
5. Delay in report generation.
6. Space consuming in storing records in a cabinet.

Objective of the Study
General Objectives

This study aims to make RFID Based Library Management System for fast processing and security of library transactions.
Specific Objectives
This study aims to:
1. Provide fast retrieval of data in borrowing and returning of books.
2. Provide easy and systematic way of identifying book status.
3. Provide fresh way of security system.
4. Provide a precise way of book inventorying.
5. Provide an accurate posting of book borrowed by the borrower.
6. Provide a centralized database management in storing records.

Significant of the Study

The study was significant to the SBC Library management, staff and to the working students for them they can easily and conveniently track the transactions in the library.
Secondly, the study is significant to students since this will make the library transaction faster.
Lastly, the study is significant to school since were their investment have a book security system in the library.
